Living with Lupus is a lifelong, uphill battle. Those that have been affected by this disease, are all to familiar with the struggles that this disease presents. With no cure in sight, know that the symptoms of lupus can be managed with the help of herbs.

Natural treatments for lupus, are accessible and can effectively lessen the symptoms of flare-ups.

Curcumin

Curcumin, an extract of Turmeric, is a powerhouse of health benefits. In lupus patients, it may reduce overall activity of the disease.

A daily dose of 1000mg of Curcumin daily was used in clinical trials and found to reduce inflammation substantially.

Reducing inflammation can help ease joint pain, and prevent damage to organ tissues, especially kidneys.

Considered very safe, curcumin is usually tolerated well, with little or no side effects. However, if you are taking blood thinners, or have an iron deficiency do not begin a curcumin regimen.

Early studies suggest that curcumin may also prevent some types of cancer cells from growing. Lupus sufferers have an increased risk of developing cancer, so taking curcumin may benefit them in more ways than one.

As with any new supplement regimen, consult a health professional before beginning treatment.

Flax Seed or Fish Oil

Both flax seed, and fish oil are abundant in Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation associated with lupus.

These particular fatty acids are also known to support healthy brain function and can help with some forms of memory loss.

There are many ways to incorporate flax seed into your diet. For whole flax seed, you may sprinkle on salads, add to cereal, or incorporate it into sauces, to name a few methods. Try getting 30 to 45 grams of seed daily incorporated into your diet for best results.

If using ground flax seed, you can stir it into yogurt, dressings, smoothies, oatmeal and more. 4 tablespoons daily of ground flax seed is ideal. You may space this out throughout the day into your meals and snacks.

Fish oil supplements are available at many retailers that carry supplements. Package dosage directions should be followed.

Flax seed and fish oil come with the same warning as curcumin. Do not consume either of these, if you are on blood thinners.

To combat the potential damage to your bones caused by corticosteriods, be sure to take a daily calcium and Vitamin D supplement.
